Auditorium of this chamber theatre provides only 150 seats, that is why it is advised to book the tickets in advance. Plays are performed in Russian. However, the expressiveness of such plays as “Happy beggars”, “Bourgeois wedding”, “Imitation of Koran”, “White, white black stork” make them comprehensible to spectators of any nationality, which was proved by successful tours of Ilkhom theatre to Germany, USA, Yugoslavia and other countries.
The theatre hosts dramatics studio-school, and those who graduate make up the core of this theatre troupe. Since the establishment of Ilkhom (inspiration) in 1976, it was an independent non-governmental theatre. Its founder, producer Mark Weil, continues managing the troupe nowadays. Ilkhom is a theatre of experiment. Its repertoire includes the plays of national authors, modern foreign dramatists, and classics of world literature. However, the reading of “classical heritage” is so original, that one’s reaction to plays of the theatre is usually ambiguous – from a complete shock and aversion to admiration. One of the plays, which is delightedly appreciated by all spectators since 1992, is “Happy beggars” on basis of C. Gocci’s play. It is a synthesis of Italian comedy dell' arte and traditional Uzbek street theatre; it is a play where the characters speak four languages – Russian, Uzbek, Italian and Yiddish.
Besides its theatre plays, Ilkhom attracts people by various projects. Among them different theatre and music festivals, concerts of Jazz, modern and classical music, exhibitions of young painters, traditional “Christmas evenings” and many others. Ilhkom’s plays were presented on international drama festivals in many countries of the world. One of interesting projects of the theatre is Mark Weil’s documentary called “End of century. Tashkent”, filmed on the basis of unique archival cinema and video materials, representing the view of author on the time, people and history of the city. Plays Begin: 18:30 Day off: Monday
