State museum of history of Uzbekistan is the oldest museum institution of Central Asia. It was established on July 12 1876 as Turkestan public museum. Thanks to a self-sacrificial work of public organizations and private contributions the museum was rapidly filled with exhibits. Besides the main exposition, it provided collections for demonstration on various temporary exhibitions, including those in Paris (1900) and Milan (1906). The museum assisted in the establishment of museums in Samarkand (1896) and Ferghana (1899). Starting from February 1919 it functioned as Turkestan state (later Main Central Asian) museum. In XX century the museum repeatedly changed its exposition halls and own names. At present time it operates in a specially constructed museum building in the center of the city.
